To me this shows that there is a considerable memory leak in Garmin Express on my setup.
This was way further as before and looked promising, but when reaching this level the download stalls and CPU starts to max out again plus memory usage continues to rise. With your recommendation to disable Time Machine with version 3.2.30.0, at least all goes good with the update till 95% of download of the map, and 94% of download of the LifeTime update. I have tried also version 4 and version 2 of Garmin Express, with version 4 ending also in a kind of CPU stress-test and version 2 failing in the process.
#Garmin express map update hangs pro
I had exactly the same issue on one iMac running OS X 10.10.2 with Garmin Express version 3.2.30.0, and the same issue on my MacBook Pro with same OS and Garmin Express version. If you are not running this version, it can be downloaded here.
#Garmin express map update hangs for mac
What version of Garmin Express are you running? The current version for Mac is 3.2.30. It is possible that the program is backing up the files while they are downloading and causing access problems to the folders. Make sure to turn off any backup utility like Time Machine while the map update is running. I then have to use force quit, to shut down Garmin express. The download slows down and then completely freezes. It gets stuck, and in the 'Macs, system Activity Monitor' it says that Garmin Express is not responding. I have a few different Garmin products(Edge 800, edge 810, forerunner, and the Nuvi 2597) and they always worked fine. I have never had this problem before, when updating software or maps on Garmin Express. I'm not running any security programs on my 2 macs. What should I do if I am having problems downloading updates in Garmin Express? You can also try the steps in the FAQ below but I have never seen any of the causes in the FAQ result in high CPU usage. It is odd that you would have this problem on two different Macs as it is not an issue that I have ever run into before. The only thing that I could think of that may cause this behavior is if you have a security program installed on your Macs that is trying to scan the files as they are downloaded or a back-up program that may be trying to back them up. I am sorry that you are having trouble with your map update.
